Selling Starts Before the Sign Goes Up
1. Before You List
Before the sign goes up, start clearing out what you do not need. Seasonal items, extra furniture, and anything adding visual clutter should be packed away early. The less that is there, the easier it is to clean, stage, and keep the home looking ready. Packing in stages is also a lot less stressful than trying to do everything at the end.
2. Plan for Showings
Do not wait until the first showing request to figure out how your house will function. Think ahead about where you, your family, and any pets will go during showings. A plan makes the whole process easier and cuts down on last-minute chaos.
3. Know Your Moving Plan
One of the most stressful parts of selling is not the listing itself. It is moving out on time. Have a plan for the rest of the packing, what needs to go first, what can wait, and how you are going to handle moving day. The more thought you give it early, the less pressure you will feel later.
4. Know What Matters to the Sale
There are things your realtor needs to know from the start. Are you moving to another house? Downsizing? What do you want to take with you, and what will stay behind? Those details matter because they affect timing, expectations, and how the sale is handled.
5. Expect a Few Surprises
Not every cost is obvious at the start. There can be repairs you did not know about, such as a leak that only shows up when you start preparing the home. There may also be ongoing costs like yard maintenance, snow clearing, or keeping walkways safe and presentable while the property is on the market. Selling goes more smoothly when you leave room for the unexpected.
